Topic: 53 electrical glitch

I'm sorting out a few issues with my 53 Sunliner purchased last month. There is an intermittent electrical issue that I need advice with. The car is a 3 speed with factory OD. The generator was rebuilt right before I bought the car as well as a new voltage regulator installed .When I first drive the car, after a short warm up, as soon as the governor energizes the relay and solenoid, the ammeter reads halfway between the mid point and full discharge, and the OD won't engage. If I floor it in 2nd the car will miss repeatedly and backfire then suddenly the ammeter needle will swing to the charge side, the car runs normally and the OD will engage normally. After this the ammeter shows the expected charging rate at speed with no further engine or OD issues. This won't happen again until the car sits overnight. Otherwise the charging system works fine. This sounds like an excessive voltage draw problem on the battery when the OD relay is energized, with the voltage regulator not switching the generator into the circuit when needed. It is a brand new voltage regulator. Am I correct here? Is this an adjustment issue with the voltage regulator? Could this be a defective unit? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
