The cam for my 59AB engine was 0.010 under size on the journals and I have a couple of 8BA engines for parts so I put an 8BA cam in the earlier engine. Now the distributor was right in the path of the fan belt so seeing a longer distributor would cure the problem I did a little machine work on a Chevy distributor and it works great. Brazed up the advance hole in the point mount plate a then milled new slot to hold advance to 24 degrees. Takes two minutes to replace points and the dwell can be set from outside the distributor with an Allen wrench. Parts are dirt cheap also. This is what happens to an 80 year old with lots of machines and a boring Memorial day weekend.

I had an 8BA cam in a 59A block in the late 60's. Used 8RT pumps and crank pulley with 49-53 generator and dual point ford distributer. There was no problem with clearances. Had a Merc crank and ran very well.

The long 8RT pumps and forward mounted generator were the problem as the truck has a shroud with the hole in it for a crankshaft mounted fan. That is the reason for the distributor with the short pumps. Your way was much easier.
