Topic: Rear Main Seal

My '40 block is out of the car, oil pan off for freeze plug replacement. When re-assembling, I'm changing the front and rear crank seals, of course. On the rear, I've pulled the main cap that has a cork seal on top to seal the oil pan and on the under side it has an aluminum housing with two channels and no seals against the thrust surface or crank. I think I've seen this referred to as a "slinger"? The gasket set came with braided, graphite colored "rope" seals that appear to be for the rear main but I can't see how they can be used for this setup.

Can someone take me to school on this? Thanks in advance.

You will not be able to use the rope type rear main seals with the slinger type rear seal. There is a steel plate that fits into the grooved pot metal pieces that is used to sling the oil back into the pan.

The gasket set is used for all V-8 Fords and some of them had the "bus" type rear seal that used the rope type seal.
