Topic: 32 engine candidates

MICHV8    -- 03-26-2015 @ 7:42 AM
So you guys have brought me this far...I have an original 32 with the 12" motor mount C-C. The engine that came with the car has matching 12" mounts, but is apparently not a 32. It apparently had some issues as it is bare and the heads are long gone. So if I abandon this engine for the time being, what is the best replacement candidate? The post 1933 motor mounts appear to be 20" C-C, so does my original front crossmember need to be changed to accept a non-babbitted engine? I've attached a couple photos of the car just for the heck of it...mostly so Dave will read this post! Just kidding...

  Mitch,

I am a banger guy so take what I say with a grain of salt. I think you will find that most of the later blocks have a boss that has been drilled and tapped for the '32 mounts. If you want to get away from the babbitt the first choice would be a '36 engine with inserts (some '36 engines were inserts and some were babbitt). A less expensive choice would be the '37 and '38 21 stud engines (note some '38's were 24 stud) with inserts. Ford actually made a water pump block off plate for the '37-'38 engines that let you run the block with the pumps in the heads.

As Charlie indicates, any V8 through '37 can be used with the '32 motor mount brackets and water inlets thereby avoiding any alteration of the front cross member or additions to the frame rails. As he also mentioned, block-off plates are required in the case of the '37 blocks and in-head water pumps in all instances.

Dave

P.S. Nice coupe project!

Thanks Charlie and Dave. I want to make sure I understand...so if I find a 37 engine with center discharge heads, will the block water pumps fit the original 32 crossmember? I'm guessing 'no'. And I'm guessing the 38 and beyond 24 stud won't work for the same block water pump reason?

You can use a '32 through '48 block with your original '32 front motor mounts. You can also use either the head or block mounted water pumps. If you use the block mounted pumps you will need to grind small grooves in the motor mounts for the fan belt to clear. My choice would be to use a '37 block with the head mounted water pumps and the '32 motor mounts. My '32 has a '48 (59A) block with block mounted water pumps and '32 motor mounts (with grooves ) and it has been running this way since 1972. The first set of water pumps had the mounting feet cut off, but the I didn't bother to do that on the last set.
