Topic: Strange miss

My 46 coupe has very recently started to buck and miss - but only when making a slow close turn, like into my driveway - especially when cold, even with the choke out...although maximum choke seems to help. Starts easy, idles smooth, runs just fine otherwise.
Recent inspection showed all plugs to be sooty, indicating rich mixture. I can't believe float level because all other operations are fine - including smooth rapid acceleration. Normal usage is short trips where the engine seldom reaches normal temp. Not sure what to look at to correct this.

Sound like a fuel delivery problem when it happens on turns. The fuel pickup tube inside the tank may have become shortened by by rust, etc, or has turned in the fitting. If it doesn't happen when the tank is mostly full that would confirm it. If the gas line between the tank and the firewall is partially plugged, or an inline filter needs to be changed, you can check it by pulling the line from the carb and cranking the engine with the ignition off. You should have a good stream of gas into a container. Your sooty plugs are likely a combination of heavy choking and not enough driving at operating temperature to burn them off.

Beware you will NOT get a steady stream of gas when you disconnect the carb line. The pump will squirt in spurts. Not like a running faucet does. lol. ken ct.

Thanks guys. Today it is idling rough and skipping even on easy straight ahead driving. I'm sure the plugs need cleaning again. I have an electric full time pump, and will begin by checking the flow to the carb. Can't believe ignition because it starts easily and has smooth acceleration in all gears.

The miss in my 46 is getting worse. Now most pronounced under load - i.e a slow pull away in second or third gear. Still starts easy, but has a momentary stumble when it first catches, as if the bowl were low on fuel - but I have a full time electric pump which fills the bowl when I turn the ignition on.

I haven't pulled gas line at carb to check fuel delivery, but no problems at steady 35 mph on open road makes me question as to whether that is the problem.

Don't overlook the ignition system. You may have a weak coil, condenser, or electrical connection somewhere. The ignition switch may be momentarily opening the circuit on turns if you have a heavy key chain hanging from the switch.

I would check the spark at idle, with the engine at normal operating temperature. I suspect that it will not be the nice 1/2" long blue spark needed for good engine operation.

You probably have a bad condenser or weak coil.

Appreciate it. Last thing I did was replace condenser - it may be bad. I have a spare coil, and although the points look OK I think I will pull the distributor and replace them along with another condenser. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again.

Making progress - following two trusims - one by my dad and other by Henry Ford. Recently installed the battery cut off switch with the green knob. Didn't really fit the battery post well, but I used a round file to open it up a little, and made do. Working under the hood today to switch coils, I bumped the negative ground strap and it fell right off. Henry said "Don't ever put anything on, or take anything off." Lesson learned. I took it off and threw it away.
Remounted the ground strap which fits correctly and tightens nicely. Going back to just disconnecting the battery for safety.

Removed the coil, which was on the car when I bought it. It was warm to the touch, and aside from plus minus, has no markings of any kind whatsoever. Truism from my Dad - "Never buy anything that a man is ashamed to put his name on." Replaced it with a new one proudly marked 6 Volt, Made in the USA.

Went for a test drive and found a HUGE improvement. Tomorrow I will put in new points and another condenser. Hopefully that will do the trick.

The battery disconnect was probably the source of your problem. When you make a change to your car, test drive it and if the performance has changed for the worse, undo the change as the first attempt to repair.

Changing parts to fix a problem, without determining the source of the problem, can introduce new problems into the car. Check your spark before you replace the points and condenser.

Your car is 6 volts so the ground cable should be on the POS terminal of the battery.

Thanks Tom. I tested each plug wire today with engine at operating temp, and at normal quiet idle. I get a very strong, bright blue spark throughout. That's good enough for me. I'm not going to even uncork the distributor cap.
