Topic: vacuum advance line purposely plugged

I just noticed that the vacuum advance inlet on my '39 'V8 85 distributor was plugged by the former owner. He had installed a 3X2 setup with an intake manifold that does not have the vacuum outlet that exists on a stock manifold. This engine runs rich and is sluggish on quick acceleration. I have suspected the carburetion was the problem. Am I crazy or doesn't this engine require the vacuum advance line be operable?
Thanks for your ideas.
Phil

The distributor does not have a vacuum advance, it is a vacuum controlled brake that slows down the mechanical advance under hard acceleration. Your car will run better if it is working.

The engine is probably running rich due to incorrect tuning of the carburetors. Read this article for some insight to your problem.

TomO, Thanks for the reply. I plan on re-establishing the vacuum line to the brake on the distributor and hope that helps it run better. Also, the article regarding timing multiple carbs on a FH which you included is excellent. Thank you so much. Phil

Update on the timing vacuum brake. I re-established the vacuum line to the brake, turned the adjusting nut almost all the way out and the engine runs much better. Now to employ the info from the great article that TomO suggested I read regarding the carbs.
