Topic: Oily head bolts

I noticed on my 239 flathead that a couple of the head bolts on the drivers side are oily. Could this mean a head gasket replacement? Or do I have a more serious problem?

Are you sure it is oil or antifreeze? Studs and head bolts always need sealant on the block ends, as some extend into the water jacket, but not into an oil gallery. Check the spark plugs in the area of the weeping bolts. If they show signs of oil or coolant, a block crack may be the cause. While it is best to pull the head to see, a good quality sealer, such as Bar's Leaks, may fix it.
