Hello everyone. I am new to this website and a newbie when it comes to managing forums. I cam across this website in searching for an answer about the 1948 Super deluxe dashboard trim. My 1948 came with plastic molding. My question is. What was the material used or what were the original trim in 1948, plastic or chrome metal? If someone can tell me I appreciate it. I am restoring a super deluxe and would like to stick to what was original on the car. Thank you

Welcome to the forum. The dash trim pieces you asked about were originally a grey green on the '48 model. Most vendors can supply them.

Thanks Clifford. The ones on the car right now not in so good a shape are a dull grey plastic, so most likely are the original. I see a bunch of that trim in chrome, does that mean that they are aftermarket reproductions or did later years or maybe other models were actually original Ford Chrome? To the best of my knowledge the chrome moldings were an after market item that was not authorized by Ford. The 41-48 Ford book shows pictures of the dashboard and what I would have to say were gray plastic moldings. If there are originals with a gray green color, I would have to say that is it. Chrome will get you penalized if you ever show the car at a Ford meet.

Correction: 47 and 48 were a grey- tan color. I don't know why I said grey -green.

The dashboard color scheme was grey/tan. That didn't mean the plastic grill and trim were grey/tan. The metal was grey. The plastic grill and trim were tan, more accurately khaki. See picture attached (ignore steering wheel. It's not the right color. Should be grey). The chrome trim came along because the plastic would warp over time from the hot sun. At one time Drake offered the metal trim unchromed and you could paint it the same color as the original plastic. There was actually an article in the V-8 Times some years back that told you how to do it. You never needed to worry about the metal trim warping from the sun.

Robert, if I was you I would purchase the 1941/1948 Ford book offered by the V-8 Club. It goes into great detail on everything you need to know about your car. If you aren't a member you should join.

By all means get the 41-48 book. It will show you the correct colors for all trim. Your plastic parts can be painted. I bought a rattle can for my trim and steering wheel. I can't remember the vendor right now. Keep it simple. john
