Hello, I need help in identifying which windshield joint clip (for a 1937) is correct. The two p/n's that I have tracked down are: 78-701392 81A-701392 The obvious part is the first one listed, but someone is selling the second one as a 1937 part. I wonder if the p/n transitioned during the 37 product? Two attachments to follow. Thanks for any help/insight. Gregg

I don't have my parts book or the '37 Ford restoration book close at hand but I would guess that the difference in part numbers would not be the fit but the finish. I actually would think that for each year there should be two different numbers for Deluxe and Standard.

The "Automotive Hardware and Trimming Supplies 1928 - 1938", published by the Ford Motor Company in May 1938, has a picture of the latter on page 125. It has the number 81A-701392-A for Standards and -B for Deluxe listed for both 78 models and 81A models. My guess is that Ford transitioned to the 38 design for both years replacing the 37 (78-) design for the 38 year as they usually would have designated it as a -C and -D update in 37 keeping the 78- prefix if it was done in the 37 model year.

The 78- number is correct for '37 having the ridge where the 81- does not. That said, if you are asking for the Sedan Delivery as your user name implies, all bets are off. Alan

37 Coupe, You refer to a 37 Ford restoration book. Is that the "The 1937 Ford Book" published by the Early Ford V-8 Club? If it is different, I would appreciate more info about it. I find that every different book contributes some of the missing details. I also have the Chassis Parts List, Body Parts list and Green Book. As juergen points out, the -A & -B part number suffixes denote the finish. I will want the -A since mine is a Standard with Mahogany grain finish.

ford38v8, Thanks for the feedback. Yes, my interest is for a standard Sedan Delivery which often times is different. Interesting though, as I find in the Body Parts List book (1937), P.59, the 81A-701392-A p/n is called out for model 78-780 (my car). Also of note is that the Tudor and Fordor cars use the same p/n. Perhaps things did transition as juergen suggests??? Maybe I will buy one of each (if I can find them) and use the one that fits/looks best. It would be nice if all the 37 guys out there would look into this and reply with which part their car has. Thanks, Gregg

Use the green book with caution. The parts listed in it are what Ford had available in 1950. The parts that are listed for your car, may not be the same as the ones that were used when it came from the factory. One of the catalogs that was published in the year your car was manufactured is more reliable, but not necessarily 100% correct. Replacement parts were not always the same as the parts used on the line, but what was available to the dealers. Tom

Thanks Tom, It sure makes it difficult (to restore a car) when you can't trust the literature, but that certainly is the case. I don't think it is widespread but it does exist. Having multiple books allows me to compare "notes". There is one case I had to laugh at. See the Automotive Hardware and Trimming Supplies (1928-1938) book, page 135. The dash insulator fastener, 353217-S4A, shows that it is used for years 1935-88! Gregg
