Topic: 39 Ford Pickup lighting problem

39 pickup is my first venture into antique vehicles. Lights and horn stopped working. I found fluid is leaking from steering box into the electrical body at the end of the steering tube and eaten away at the bakelite contact switch. This is new area for me. I think the steering box has 90w, what about thicker lub? Also any suggestion on servicing the electrical. Having the lighting/horn wiring combo in a body in the steering column is new for me.

The horn/light rod goes down through the steering box, and requires a stand tube going up to prevent the fluid from running into the circuit box as you have found. This stand tube is often found to be broken from its mount, and will require brazing it back on again. Clean the circuit box and contacts with a spray can of the right stuff (can't remember the name) and give it a try.

The horn wire going down the rod connects to the horn relay, grounding that circuit to supply power to the horn. You may test the horn by bypassing that wire at the relay.

The lights are fed by a fuse under your dash above your steering column. All lights (only) from this fuse.

I bought one of those steering column end plates with the tube welded on it from the Early Ford Store, San Dimas, CA. There was only a plate holding in a cork gasket (which failed) before. The tube opening extends up above the level of the oil in the steering box. That solved the oil leaking into the switch problem. The steering box still has other leakage which I slowed down by putting in some STP. I replaced the entire light switch and harness assembly. Most all of the major on-line vendors have the switches and harnesses.
