I do not want to over tighten the spark plugs on my
36 - 221 v/8, but when I got a little water around the
base of the plugs with washers-I discovered air bubbles.
Snugged them down and all is good. Looked every where
for torque specs.-found nothing.(Cast. heads)
Just curious!

I don't know anybody that torques spark plugs. I wouldn't worry on cast iron heads you can go pretty tight a little less so on alum. ones. ken ct.

Back in the cobwebs of my memory, I'm thinking that Champion had a specific torque recommendation for 14mm plugs. Their thinking was that if they were under torqued they wouldn't seal and if they were over torqued it would distort the gap. I believe it was 20 or 25 ft. lbs but could be wrong. Champion or someone came out with a device that went between the socket and the ratchet that would click like a torque wrench when you reached the correct torque They also recommended that you use new gaskets each time you removed the plugs. We would clean and regap the plugs one or two times during their life, mostly to save money. Thet cost $1.00 to $1.25 each at a time we were lucky to make $1.50 an hour

Van Pelt (http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_torquespecs32-48V8.htm) lists a couple of ranges for spark plug torque.

  36,
The Ford shop manual for the 8BA flathead cast iron heads calls for Torque between 25 to 30 lbs. for the H-10 spark plugs.

I knew I would get an answer somewhere. Back in the
younger years I would strip`em - break`em and
over tighten and should have used a torque wrench.
Now I don`t have the strength to make`em tight. When
your not sure -torque it. I also remember $1.00 Hr.
and gas stations @.26 gal.
Hey -Thanks fellows & Happy Holidays
