Topic: 51 F1 distributor

I just received a rebuilt distributor from Dennis Carpenter. The housing shaft is 1/2 mm too wide for the tube it slides into in the engine. Carpenter is closed due to weather, today. Anybody ever had such a problem. Why would a factory rebuilt be too large?

I have had problems getting them out when they haven't been removed for a long time. maybe the hole has some corrosion in it, [sometimes its hard to see] or the hole has been mashed slightly. Since it is so close,I would take a brake cylinder hone and clean it out, of course make sure no grit goes down the hole. It might be better to pull the timing cover first.
Aluminum is great for this. Good luck

It turns out that when Carpenter restored the distributor they painted the shaft (a no-no). That added 1/2 mm to the diameter, enough to prohibit its entry into the sleeve. Carpenter then rebuilt my original, and that fits fine. Many thanks to al.
