  I am working on a 1940 Ford heavy 1 1/2 ton truck. Does anyone know what temperature thermostats originally came in this? I can readily get 160 or 180 ones. I want to put in the ones as originally provided by Henry.

  Alcohol was the prevailing anti-freeze in 1940, so the thermostats were either 160 degree or adjustable. Permanent (ethylene glycol) was available and the dealers were instructed to install 180 degree thermostats when it was installed.

I read somewhere that the cooling systems were empty in the areas where water would freeze and the dealer was responsible for filling the cooling system. No thermostats would be installed in an empty system.

  Thanks TomO - So with modern antifreeeze I should go with the 180s? I understand that the engines run better the hotter they are without boiling of course.

  Flathead engines tend to run hot, so it makes little difference which temperature thermostats you install. With a good radiator and clean block, you could run at 160 degrees in the summer, but most of the cars run close to 180 in the summer. Make sure that you install a good quality thermostat that is large enough to fit in the hose at the head end, without tipping.
