Topic: HELP! Starting 1940 Pickup.

gcraigstep    -- 10-23-2016 @ 6:00 PM
I inherited my fathers 1940 Ford Pickup. It is still parked in his garage. Not sure how long it's been since it was last started. After a couple attempts at starting it I have decided to ask for some help. Would anyone, with more knowledge than myself on the Flat Heads, be interested in helping me start it? I live in Olympia Wa.

Very nice looking truck. I dont live near, but since you didnt mention your knowledge of the vehicle, I will help you with a couple of basic things.
Believing that it is original, you will have to be aware that it is 6 volt positive ground. Yes, the positive battery cable goes to the chassis. I mention this because sometimes new owners think that the electrical system is the same as their modern vehicle.

The next test will be for spark -- remove one of the plug wires and see is you can see a spark jump from it to the plug while someone else is turning the engine over. There is the possibility that you will get a shock from this, so use rubber gloves and hold the wire.
If spark, then the next test is for fuel. A test of the fuel pump can be done by disconnecting the fuel line that goes to the carb. Use a small cup or pop can and put the end of the fuel line removed from the carb in the container. Now have someone crank over the engine and see if fuel is being sent to the carb (the cup or pop can should get some gas in it).

If you have both of these, then the next steps are more complex --- timing. But these should get you started (no pun intended).

Since you live in Olympia check the left menu of this site and open the page titled Regional Club Directory. Scroll down to Washington and open that page. Then look at the Puget Sound Regional Group. Contact the president and I think he may be able to refer you to a member in the Olympia area that can help you. Having a helping hand in your area that is familiar with flatheads can make this an easy task. Very nice pickup and they are a very popular model.
If your dad was a V-8 club member he would have a club roster somewhere around the house. You can use the roster to also look up members in Washington state and specifically Olympia.
