Thanks! I can see this clearly. I am also trying to figure out what a correct battery is for this. Is it the one with Mercury script on it?

My Dad owned a '50 - decades back - that he used to mentor me in cutting my wrenching teeth on. From memory only - and a LOT of time has passed since then - I do not recall the spark plug wires being so loosely arranged on his car as shown in this pic (note wires appear to be laying on the top of the coil as well). Perhaps this was factory, I just do not recall. Did some sort of wire guide(s) (in addition to the 2 seen in the pic for the for the driver's side bank of wires) and cleaner routing exist on the '49s-'51s, or is this 'original' styled set of replacement wires perhaps too long &/or flexible, or does this image simply display the way it was? Good catch, Steve. The plug wires should be routed along the intake manifold. There were no other conduits or clamps to keep the wires organized. http://www.oldcarbrochures.org/index.php/NA/Mercury/1949_Mercury/1949-Mercury-All-New-Brochure/1949-Mercury-All-New--06-07 I am sorry that I can not answer your battery question, as I do not remember what was provided by the factory. Mercury script batteries did exist in 1949 but there are more than a few factors that could have affected whether it had a Ford or Mercury script battery. The different assembly plants may have had shortages at times although most of the shortages were caused by the outbreak of the Korean conflict in mid 1950. My best guess is that it could have had either battery installed when new in late 1948 or 1949. Canada might have been more of an exception since Ford dealers and Mercury dealers were kept separate from each other. Correctness might be up to a judge at a show but I don't know what the judging standards would be.
