Topic: 40 Merc coupe upper door hinge

Both of my upper hinges are worn so there is pin slop and door sags. Has anyone got any suggestions on how to fix this problem. I've seen where some hinges can be drilled oversize and a bushing installed so it is back to original size. This hinge does not have enough material out to the edge to do this. I'd rather fix if I could unless someone knows of a place who makes these or someone has some good used ones they're willing to sell.

I don't know of a good way to repair the upper door hinge. You could use an oversize pin on the lower hinge, but not on the concealed upper hinge. That hinge is only used on the 1939 and 1940 coupe, convertible and 4-door convertible, so they are hard to find.

You could look at the 41-48 front doors to see if the upper hinge could be modified to work on the 40 Mercury.

Another option is to shim the lower hinge to raise the door so that it fits right. It is important that the lower hinge pin does not have any slop as it will cause the door to sag.
