Did they use a worm gear mechanism to operate the top like Ford and Merc or where they hydraulic?

The 52-55 Lincoln convertibles used the jackscrew system. I don't know when they went to hydraulic.

Ford had difficulty in obtaining a reliable method of operating the convertible top. After the vacuum system was tried in the '40s, the hydraulic method arrived in late 1941 into '42. It had the virtue of applying even pressure to prevent binding of the top linkage as the cylinders were automatically even. When we reached the 50's, the jackscrew was revived. The most complicated top was the retractible hardtop, a maze of screws, gears, and switches. It was a real "head scratcher" to get it all to work in concert. Any convertible top relies on linkage that is properly adjusted and non binding. Too often, the mechanism was just disconnected, and the top wrestled up and down by hand instead of repairing it. That was the case with my '47 convertible when I found it. Now, with my "home brew" control, it is just a matter of flipping the switch, really handy in a sudden shower!

Both sets of points are set for the same amount of dwell. Could you be confusing the timing with dwell???
