Topic: !940 Ford Convertible

HotrodFrankie    -- 08-17-2015 @ 6:36 AM
  Hi Guys

I'm new to this site because I mainly build classic chevys. I just bought the car of my childhood dreams and that is a 40 Ford Convertible.

This car is just a sh*ll with many parts not attached or missing. I'm not going to build it stock but as a modified hotrod.

I just ordered $100 worth of manuals from MACS.

Here is my first question. The top frame is off and I want to get it on before winter so I can put a cover over the car. Can't seem to figure how it attaches to the body.

Anyone have any info that can help?

Would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Hotrod Frankie

Frank, Give me a day or two and I will get a bunch of photos to you that should help with your assembly process.
I know the car you'd purchased, having looked at it myself.
Perhaps you can private message me with your email address? That would make the transmission of the photos a much smoother operation.
In the meantime I have attached herein an illustration of the top assembly.
Kind regards,
Mike "Kube" Kubarth

By the way where is this document from? Can I buy this somewhere?

kubes40    -- 08-17-2015 @ 11:23 AM
That illustration is out of the 1940 Ford Body Parts Manual.
I think that manual is reproduced in a reduced size. They are available (authentic copies) on eBay with some frequency.

  Hi Kube

The main pics I need is where the top frame is attached to the body.

Thanks

Anybody?

  Hi Kube

Any luck with the convertible top photos yet?

Frank

Sorry Frank, I simply forgot. Hope this helps. Let me know...

I do not believe the diagram Kube posted is in the reprint body parts book. There are at least two original body parts books. They were printed on different dates. The early book may or may not have the diagram either but the later blue cover body parts book does have several photos of hardware and diagrams.

Thanks for the info. Any idea where I can get this blue cover book?

HotrodFrankie    -- 08-27-2015 @ 6:14 AM
Thanks for the pic but I may need alot more. Not sure where I will find them though.

Original Ford Literature is for sale by specialty dealers of old car literature and you may find a copy on ebay. Always be aware some of the original literature was reprinted. In the case of the blue cover body parts book, the reprint is much smaller in size than the original.

Frank, Let me know if and when you may need other photos. Please be specific of what area.
Mike

  Thanks

I need any and all photos of how the frame attaches to the body if possible. I'm dealing with no references whatsoever. I don't know what I have or what I'm missing.

Thanks again
Frank

  Next discussion!
Wood parts for the convertible!

I find no wood parts for the 40 convertible sold anywhere.

One guy showed me a pic that looks like he made one bow part out of electrical conduit.

Another guy stated that he had the header bow manufactured.

I was thinking I could make the header bow myself out of ash or other hard wood if I had adequate pics and/or dimensions.

If anyone has any info or pics of the bows I would certainly appreciate it.

I'm also a Hotrod and classic car show judge and I've yet to find a convertible at a show that I could photo. Please help I want to do something soon so I can cover my project outside over the winter until I can sell some cars for garage space.

This whole convertible top thing is making me crazy.

Best Franj

Check with Lebaron-Bonney. If they don't have the bows they can refer you to someone who does have them.

also Brad's Wood Shop, 1528 San Juan Dr., Friday Harbor, WA 98250, 360-378-3886, bradswoodshop@Hotmail.com he has a small catalog he can send you.

  Hi There

Can you send me a pic of the cover of the parts book you are talking about?

I just spent another $25 on a blue cover 40 Ford parts book and its the worst thing I ever saw. No way a dealer parts counter can identify parts from this book.. In my technical publications development company we developed parts list with associated illustrations for parts identification and ordering. This book is just a parts listing, totally unusable.

HotrodFrankie    -- 09-05-2015 @ 1:15 PM
Kube can you send me a pic of the cover of the parts book the illustration came from? If its not too much could you give me a pic of the parts listing that is associated with the exploded view you sent also?

Thanks in advance,
Frank

You probably have bought the reprint. The original has the drawings.

Here is a link to an E-Bay listing for one

I've never seen the reprint but can tell you the authentic body parts book from Ford has few illustrations.
And yes, that is exactly what the counter person ordered from years ago.
The chassis parts books from Ford were much better illustrated.

HotrodFrankie    -- 09-06-2015 @ 11:30 AM
Thanks, I bought it hope its worth the $100.

I wonder if anyone has a copy of the article in "cars & Parts" magazine about the 40 Ford convertible? October 1982.

"The Convertible Club Coup of 1940" by Bob Stevens.

HotrodFrankie    -- 09-12-2015 @ 9:52 AM
Found and bought the 1982 issue of Cars & Parts Magazine on ebay. Says it covers 1940 convertible top cage extensively. If so I will share the info with the club and Kube. $5 with shipping was a bargain.
