recently came across a complete block from a 40 coupe, when it was inspected it did not have sleeves but was a standard bore 221, it also has 3 ring steel pistons, is this a early block, I also have the heads, intake is there anything special about this engine? what do I need to look for to determine what it is

The 81A block was used a couple of years before 40. Many of the blocks may be sleeve free, some will have sleeves from the factory. Many had sleeves installed during a rebuild. For the 81A block look for the flat intake manifold surface, the 4 plugs in the oil pan surface, the 81A embossed into the cast iron on the top of the bell housing. If Ford installed the sleeves the intake manifold surface MAY BE stamped S or SL

I know the 81 A blocks came out in late 38, this block has the four dipples on the pan rails, flat deck, prominent cast in 81 A and has never been rebuilt or into- steel pistons. I have the heads in a tank now and will look at them when they come out.
